"Wendepunkte"

Okay, so “Go Fish” presented some ideas and didn’t follow through on them very well, and it wasn’t exactly the *best* Buffy episode ever. But it also wasn’t the worst. It was a filler episode and an entertaining one. As someone recently said, “If I don’t expect more than I’m promised, I can live with it.” I totally agree.

We can’t expect a “Surprise” or “Innocence” every episode, and—as far as I know—Joss and company have never said they would give us one. They’re keeping us entertained and moving things along, and to that end, “Go Fish” accomplished its goal. We got an over zealous coach who tried something ‘new and different’ with his swim team with the help of the school nurse. Exactly what the mystery drug was and how the nurse fit in wasn’t made clear (okay, it was breezed over), but the results gave us some quality Buffy moments. More later.

The coach never expected ‘his boys’ to turn into creatures from the Black Lagoon, he only wanted to improve their performance. Still, his obsession with winning drove him to commit murder and set up a gang rape. Then we have the ‘jocks rule’ mentality. Why are athletes allowed to get away with blowing off their classes, behaving like an obnoxious subspecies, and treating everyone (girls in particular) like objects for their amusement and abuse? The fact that these ‘winners’ turned into fishy monsters (who did whatever to their coach in the end) didn’t cause me grief or sympathy. Too bad real-life jocks don’t meet similar fates.

Though I think Buffy and Cordelia’s preferred way of dressing is a bit much, it irks me to no end when girls and women are blamed for the behavior of males because of what they wear. (What is up with that? Can we say impulse control?) In addition, I thought Snyder’s reaction stank, and the Scooby gang’s non-reaction out of character. Okay . . . Buffy doesn’t roll over and play dead, but what if it had been someone else? Does a girl have to be raped and beaten in order to be shown concern or to be worthy of a rant? And, during the final showdown, I thought the coach’s remark was sufficient [to show intent] without Buffy adding, “Great. This is just what my reputation needs, that I *did* it with the entire swim team.” Another gripe of mine would be Principal Snyder. Yes, he's ornery and unreasonable, but he needs a bit more substance. His ragging on Buffy all the time, and general pushy behavior is wearing thin. I've heard of disagreeable authority figures, but this guy is ridiculous. On the plus side, “Go Fish” had a few good scenes. Sometimes it’s hard to remember there are many other students at Sunnydale High, and that they might have unfavorable impressions of our Scooby gang. But “Go Fish” broadens its scope a bit and provides a peek. Through Gage and Cameron, we see that while she’s cute, Buffy is considered “creepy.”

OTHER THINGS THAT WORKED: 1) The girls’ reaction to Xander in Speedo’s, and he didn’t look bad. (2) Buffy trashing Cameron. “Little and flashy” does not mean “weak and take what you want.” Buffy’s grimace when Snyder showed up was good, too. (3) The dialogue in the library after the attack rant—especially the skin part. Call me warped, who hasn’t? :) (4) Xander’s comment about Buffy not being on Cam’s list of privileges, and his reaction to Cam’s remains on the cafeteria floor. I thought my hubby was a good screamer, for a 6’2 person of the male persuasion, but Xander is much better. LOL (4) Cordy. She looked sensational and her poolside scene was very well done. I like seeing the softer side of Cordy. She’s quite adorable when she puts her mind to it. (5) Giles’s reaction to Buffy’s “spending too much time with him remark.” (6) Jonathan’s “I snuck in yesterday and peed in the pool,” and Willow’s reaction. Now *that* was funny!

For the people who are wondering why Angel *had* to make an appearance, my guess would be to show something was wrong with the swimmers’ blood. Besides, I liked seeing him attack a guy. I was hoping they would be daring enough to show Angel with a bloody mouth, but the spitting thing was an okay cop-out. I also liked Angel’s, “Why, Miss Summers, you’re beautiful.” Gotta love his voice! Angel’s attack also gave Gage the chance to show he wasn’t invincible. I’m glad we weren’t robbed of his “Walk me home?” It’s nice to see Buffy beginning to heal—at least she’s trying to interact with new people. Too bad she’s picking guys who are creepier than Angelus. “Go Fish” was an okay stand-alone episode. I give it 2-1/2 stakes.

Buffy hatte ein Date mit einem Typen namens Tylor als sie noch in L.A. war.

Cordelia: "How about because you're a tiny, impotent Nazi with a bug up his butt the size of an emu?"
The entire argument scene in the library was wonderful, especially the climax...
Buffy: "What happened to Angel wasn't his fault."
Xander: "Yeah, but what happened to Ms. Calendar is. You can paint this any way you want, but the way I see it is that you wanna forget all about Ms. Calendar's murder so you can get your boyfriend back."

Buffy: "Yeah, Xander was pretty much being a... Willow! Where did you learn that word? My god, do you kiss your mother with that mouth?"

Spike's assessment of Acathla's tomb: "It's a big rock. Can't wait to tell my friends. They don't have a rock this big."

Whistler: "Bottom line is, even if you see 'em coming, you're not ready for the big moments. No one asks for their life to change, not really. But it does. So what are we, helpless? Puppets? No. The big moments are gonna come, you can't help that. It's what you do afterwards that counts. That's when you find out who you are."
